Senior Automation Engineer

Location: Oldenzaal | Employment: 32–40 hours per week

Salary: €4,700–€6,000 gross per month on a full-time basis, excluding holiday allowance

About this role.

Do you want to provide technical direction on complex industrial automation projects while remaining closely involved in design and programming? As a Senior Automation Engineer at iAUTOMATION, you will be a technical leader who translates customer needs into robust control solutions. You will take responsibility for the consistency of technical design, software, testing and commissioning.

We support industrial customers in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, energy, chemicals, and food and beverage. Assignments range from new installations to challenging brownfield upgrades, software migrations and modifications to systems essential for production. Reliability, careful testing and clear coordination are particularly important in these environments.

You will discuss system architecture, software standards, technical risks and implementation strategies with customers and colleagues. You will be a key point of contact for complex troubleshooting and support junior and medior engineers in their development, helping maintain a high standard of engineering and documentation.

You will have room to take on technical leadership without moving away from hands-on engineering. Some projects and commissioning activities require travel, although travel is generally limited.

What will you do?

Your responsibilities will include

  • Automation architecture and technical design: Work with the customer and project team to define the architecture and structure of a control solution.
  • Advanced PLC, HMI and SCADA engineering: Program complex components and assess the technical quality and consistency of delivered solutions.
  • FAT/SAT and commissioning leadership: Help define test strategies and acceptance criteria and oversee controlled delivery of system changes.
  • Complex troubleshooting: Lead or support investigations involving multiple systems or technical disciplines.
  • Customer advice and technical decisions: Explain design trade-offs, reliability, feasibility and risks to stakeholders.
  • Coaching and standards: Act as a technical point of contact for junior and medior engineers and contribute to better engineering practices.
  • Technical input for proposals: Contribute to scope definitions, approaches and engineering estimates when new work is being prepared.

The level of independence expected will depend on your experience, the project and the customer environment.

What does the role offer?

  • A gross monthly salary of €4,700–€6,000, depending on your knowledge and experience, on a full-time basis and excluding holiday allowance.
  • 25 vacation days and 13 additional ADV days each year for full-time employees (38 days off in total).
  • 8% holiday allowance, paid in June.
  • Pension accrual through Pensioenfonds Metaal en Techniek (PMT), subject to the pension scheme’s participation requirements.
  • Employment conditions under the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Metal and Technology – Technical Installation Companies (CAO Metaal en Techniek – Technisch Installatiebedrijf).
  • Flexible working hours between 08:00 and 18:00, where operational needs and customer commitments allow.
  • A commuting allowance of €0.25 per kilometre for travel by private vehicle, up to a maximum commuting distance of 60 kilometres one way, in accordance with company policy.
  • Compensation for overtime and additional business travel time in accordance with the applicable arrangements.
  • Opportunities for education, training and certifications in line with your role and development.
  • Varied work in industrial environments, direct communication and supportive colleagues.
  • Annual team activities and a company Christmas dinner.
  • Scope to lead technically, share knowledge and take on a lead role while staying hands-on.

Full-time employment means 38 paid contractual hours per week, with a 40-hour working week and ADV time accrued. For part-time employees, salary and leave are calculated pro rata.

What knowledge and experience do we ask for?

  • An MBO level 4 or HBO qualification in Industrial Automation, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, (Technical) Computer Science or similar.
  • At least eight years of experience in PLC programming and industrial automation.
  • Extensive experience with HMI/SCADA, industrial communications and commissioning.
  • The ability to independently deliver projects or major project work packages.
  • A willingness to share knowledge and coach colleagues.
  • Good Dutch and English; German is an advantage.

We work with platforms including Siemens TIA Portal, STEP 7 and PCS 7, Allen-Bradley, WinCC, Ignition and Wonderware. Motion control, drives and industrial networks may also be part of a project. Broad expertise is welcome, but no one is expected to know everything.
