Medior Automation Engineer
Location: Oldenzaal | Employment: 32–40 hours per week
Salary: €3,600–€4,600 gross per month on a full-time basis, excluding holiday allowance
About this role.
Are you an Automation Engineer who can independently deliver PLC and SCADA solutions while enjoying collaboration with other specialists? As a Medior Automation Engineer at iAUTOMATION, you will work on industrial control systems from technical design through commissioning. You will be responsible for your own parts of a project and remain closely involved in implementation.
Our work spans pharmaceuticals, energy, chemicals, and food and beverage. Projects include new installations, modifications, upgrades and migrations, as well as improvements to existing production lines. You will alternate between new development, careful changes to existing systems and solving problems in operational industrial environments.
You will translate customer requirements into reliable control designs, make technical decisions in consultation with colleagues and carry out engineering work independently. You will also prepare and support FAT/SAT and perform commissioning activities, sometimes on your own. If an installation does not perform as expected, you will investigate its root cause and work toward a lasting solution.
Alongside your own assignments, you will share your knowledge with junior engineers and interns. You do not need expertise in every software platform: we are looking for a strong technical foundation, initiative and a willingness to keep learning.
What will you do?
Your responsibilities will include
- Independent PLC design and programming: Translate functional requirements into reliable PLC software and make technical choices suited to the installation.
- HMI and SCADA development: Develop and improve operator screens and ensure they are logically integrated with the control system.
- FAT and SAT preparation and execution: Plan and conduct acceptance tests with colleagues or customers, recording findings and outstanding issues.
- Remote and on-site commissioning: Verify that the control system operates correctly with the installation and support a smooth handover.
- Fault analysis and lasting improvements: Identify root causes and develop more than a temporary fix.
- Documentation: Record software, configurations, design decisions and changes for maintenance and future upgrades.
- Mentoring: Share practical knowledge and help junior engineers and interns with technical decisions.
The level of independence expected will depend on your experience, the project and the customer environment.
What does the role offer?
- A gross monthly salary of €3,600–€4,600, depending on your knowledge and experience, on a full-time basis and excluding holiday allowance.
- 25 vacation days and 13 additional ADV days each year for full-time employees (38 days off in total).
- 8% holiday allowance, paid in June.
- Pension accrual through Pensioenfonds Metaal en Techniek (PMT), subject to the pension scheme’s participation requirements.
- Employment conditions under the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Metal and Technology – Technical Installation Companies (CAO Metaal en Techniek – Technisch Installatiebedrijf).
- Flexible working hours between 08:00 and 18:00, where operational needs and customer commitments allow.
- A commuting allowance of €0.25 per kilometre for travel by private vehicle, up to a maximum commuting distance of 60 kilometres one way, in accordance with company policy.
- Compensation for overtime and additional business travel time in accordance with the applicable arrangements.
- Opportunities for education, training and certifications in line with your role and development.
- Varied work in industrial environments, direct communication and supportive colleagues.
- Annual team activities and a company Christmas dinner.
- Ownership of your own project work packages and the opportunity to support junior colleagues.
Full-time employment means 38 paid contractual hours per week, with a 40-hour working week and ADV time accrued. For part-time employees, salary and leave are calculated pro rata.
What knowledge and experience do we ask for?
- An MBO level 4 or HBO qualification in Industrial Automation, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, (Technical) Computer Science or similar.
- At least three years of experience in PLC programming and industrial automation.
- Experience with HMI/SCADA, FAT/SAT and commissioning.
- Knowledge of industrial communication such as PROFINET, PROFIBUS, Modbus or OPC UA.
- An independent approach and clear communication with customers and colleagues.
- Good Dutch and English; German is an advantage.
Our projects use platforms including Siemens TIA Portal and STEP 7, Allen-Bradley, WinCC, Ignition and Wonderware. You do not need to master every platform; we value both your existing skills and willingness to learn.
