Controls Engineer
Location: Oldenzaal | Employment: 32–40 hours per week
Salary: €3,200–€4,800 gross per month on a full-time basis, excluding holiday allowance
About this role.
Do you want to understand how an entire machine or production line works and develop smart control solutions for it? As a Controls Engineer at iAUTOMATION, you will combine PLC programming with knowledge of electrical engineering, sensors, actuators and industrial processes. You will see how your design and software come together in a working installation.
Assignments range from new control systems to the modernization, expansion and optimization of existing installations. You will collaborate with other disciplines and with customers in sectors including pharmaceuticals, energy, chemicals, and food and beverage. This variety will expose you to different machines, processes and engineering challenges.
You will translate technical and functional requirements into control designs, develop or modify PLC and HMI/SCADA software, coordinate hardware interfaces and signals, and support testing and commissioning. When a system behaves unexpectedly, you will investigate the interaction between software, electrical components and the process itself.
Depending on your experience, you may initially work alongside an experienced engineer or take ownership of project work packages. You do not need to know every platform already: a good technical foundation and the motivation to develop are more important.
What will you do?
Your responsibilities will include
- Control system design and programming: Turn required machine or process behavior into control logic and technical solutions.
- PLC and HMI/SCADA development: Program control functions and visualizations and verify their integration with the installation.
- Sensor and actuator integration: Understand how field signals are processed and how devices work together.
- Coordination across technical disciplines: Align software, electrical drawings, connections and process behavior with colleagues.
- FAT/SAT and commissioning: Test solutions carefully and support handover into operation.
- Troubleshooting and optimization: Investigate incidents by looking at software, components and process conditions as one system.
- Documentation and technology development: Record changes and continue expanding your knowledge of control engineering.
The level of independence expected will depend on your experience, the project and the customer environment.
What does the role offer?
- A gross monthly salary of €3,200–€4,800, depending on your knowledge and experience, on a full-time basis and excluding holiday allowance.
- 25 vacation days and 13 additional ADV days each year for full-time employees (38 days off in total).
- 8% holiday allowance, paid in June.
- Pension accrual through Pensioenfonds Metaal en Techniek (PMT), subject to the pension scheme’s participation requirements.
- Employment conditions under the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Metal and Technology – Technical Installation Companies (CAO Metaal en Techniek – Technisch Installatiebedrijf).
- Flexible working hours between 08:00 and 18:00, where operational needs and customer commitments allow.
- A commuting allowance of €0.25 per kilometre for travel by private vehicle, up to a maximum commuting distance of 60 kilometres one way, in accordance with company policy.
- Compensation for overtime and additional business travel time in accordance with the applicable arrangements.
- Opportunities for education, training and certifications in line with your role and development.
- Varied work in industrial environments, direct communication and supportive colleagues.
- Annual team activities and a company Christmas dinner.
- Room to develop expertise in controls, process automation and IT/OT.
Full-time employment means 38 paid contractual hours per week, with a 40-hour working week and ADV time accrued. For part-time employees, salary and leave are calculated pro rata.
What knowledge and experience do we ask for?
- An MBO level 4 or HBO qualification in Electrical Engineering, Industrial Automation, Mechatronics or a similar field.
- A foundation in electrical engineering and an interest in control engineering.
- Basic knowledge of PLC and SCADA systems.
- An understanding of the relationship between software and hardware.
- An analytical approach and the ability to work well with colleagues and customers.
- Good Dutch and English; knowledge of IT/OT is an advantage.
Technologies may include Siemens TIA Portal, STEP 7 and PCS 7, Allen-Bradley/Rockwell, WinCC and Wonderware. The application and customer requirements determine the platform. Experience in one system is a good starting point for learning others.
