Junior Automation Engineer
Location: Oldenzaal | Employment: 32–40 hours per week
Salary: €2,900–€3,500 gross per month on a full-time basis, excluding holiday allowance
About this role.
Would you like to start your career in industrial automation and develop into an independent Automation Engineer? At iAUTOMATION, you will learn the profession through hands-on experience. Working alongside experienced colleagues, you will help design, program, test and commission control systems for industrial installations.
Our customers operate in sectors including pharmaceuticals, energy, chemicals, and food and beverage. You will contribute to new installations, expansions, modernization projects, software migrations and improvements to existing production processes. You will discover how control software, electrical installations, industrial networks and machinery work together.
You will start with clearly defined engineering tasks under the guidance of a more experienced engineer. You will support PLC and SCADA changes, testing and commissioning, and join customer visits where possible. As your skills and confidence grow, you will take ownership of increasingly independent project tasks. Curiosity, a technical foundation and a willingness to ask questions matter more to us than years of experience.
You will join a team of around 30 colleagues who share knowledge, communicate directly and work together on practical solutions. You will have the opportunity not only to understand the technology but also to see the impact of your work in practice.
What will you do?
Your responsibilities will include
- PLC programming and modifications under supervision: Start with well-defined changes to PLC programs and learn how a control system is structured, tested and documented.
- HMI and SCADA visualization: Help develop or modify screens and operator functions that allow users to monitor and control processes.
- FAT and SAT testing: Work with colleagues to check that control software meets agreed requirements and document the test results.
- Commissioning support, remotely and on site: See how control systems are connected, checked and brought into operation step by step.
- Troubleshooting with colleagues: Learn how to reproduce faults, investigate likely causes and make controlled changes to software or settings.
- Technical documentation: Record software changes and test results so colleagues and customers understand what has been modified.
The level of independence expected will depend on your experience, the project and the customer environment.
What does the role offer?
- A gross monthly salary of €2,900–€3,500, depending on your knowledge and experience, on a full-time basis and excluding holiday allowance.
- 25 vacation days and 13 additional ADV days each year for full-time employees (38 days off in total).
- 8% holiday allowance, paid in June.
- Pension accrual through Pensioenfonds Metaal en Techniek (PMT), subject to the pension scheme’s participation requirements.
- Employment conditions under the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Metal and Technology – Technical Installation Companies (CAO Metaal en Techniek – Technisch Installatiebedrijf).
- Flexible working hours between 08:00 and 18:00, where operational needs and customer commitments allow.
- A commuting allowance of €0.25 per kilometre for travel by private vehicle, up to a maximum commuting distance of 60 kilometres one way, in accordance with company policy.
- Compensation for overtime and additional business travel time in accordance with the applicable arrangements.
- Opportunities for education, training and certifications in line with your role and development.
- Varied work in industrial environments, direct communication and supportive colleagues.
- Annual team activities and a company Christmas dinner.
- Personal coaching from experienced Automation Engineers and the opportunity to gradually take on more responsibility.
Full-time employment means 38 paid contractual hours per week, with a 40-hour working week and ADV time accrued. For part-time employees, salary and leave are calculated pro rata.
What knowledge and experience do we ask for?
- A completed MBO level 4 or HBO qualification in Industrial Automation, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics or a comparable field.
- Basic PLC programming knowledge, for example gained during your studies or an internship.
- An interest in the relationship between software, hardware and production processes.
- A curious attitude and willingness to ask questions and learn.
- Good command of Dutch and English; German is an advantage.
Depending on the customer, we work with Siemens TIA Portal, STEP 7 or PCS 7, Allen-Bradley and SCADA platforms such as WinCC, Ignition and Wonderware. You do not need to know all of them; we will help you develop your skills.
